Please note: We have also several interesting Master and Bachelor projects available. Please contact Jochen if you have any questions.PhD position - X-ray–protein interactions from MD simulations
The position is available in the group of Dr. Jochen Hub, on the topic of molecular dynamics simulations of protein–X-ray interactions. The project is embedded in the Collaborative Research Center 860 on Dynamics of Macromolecular Assemblies. The PhD studies can be conducted within the local GGNB Graduate School, providing a stimulating environment for the PhD candidate.
We offer:
- Close mentoring of the project in a junior group, yet a lot of freedom to develop own ideas
- Young research environment with a lot of possibilities to contribute to the development of the group
- Highly topical research project
- Stimulating research environment: the Göttingen campus provides a world-leading research environment in molecular biophysics.
- Very good CPU recourses on the group's own cluster and in external computing centers
- Excellent cooperations within Göttingen (SFB 803, SFB 860) and to research groups abroad (Gothenburg, Stockholm, Linz)
- Regular employment including social benefits (TV-L E13, 50%). The position is limited to 3 years.
- Of course, participation in international scientific congresses.
Scientific details: Wide-angle X-ray Scattering (WAXS) is an emerging experimental technique which can provide structural information about biomolecules (proteins, DNA, RNA) in solution and, thus, under physiological conditions. In addition, such methods even yield time-resolved insight into conformation transitions of biomolecules, and could therefore in principle observe these intriguing molecular machines "in action".
So far, the interpretation of (time-resolved) WAXS spectra is difficult and therefore restricts a wider application of the method. We aim to change this unsatisfactory situation using molecular dynamics simulations, carried out on state-of-the-art high-performance computing facilities, with the aim to derive atomistic interpretations of WAXS data. The WAXS spectra will be measured by colleagues in the same corridor, thus allowing very tight collaboration to experimentalists. The detailed direction of the project can also be decided together with the PhD candidate.
We seek: We are looking for a highly motivated and team-oriented PhD student who is interested to work in a young and stimulating research environment. The applicant should have a degree in physics, chemistry, bioinformatics, or a related subject. Experience in molecular dynamics, programming, or Linux/Unix-like environments is beneficial, but not required. Most important is a strong interest in molecular biophysics.
Please send your full application until May. 8, 2013, to Dr. Jochen Hub (jhub@gwdg.de). Please include a cover letter (including a brief statement of motivation), a CV, all academic certificates (including course records), and two references who are willing to write a letter of recommendation upon request.
The University of Göttingen is an equal opportunities employer and places particular emphasis on fostering career opportunities for women. Qualified women are therefore strongly encouraged to apply as they are underrepresented in this field. Disabled persons with equivalent aptitude will be favored.
We are looking forward to hear from you!
